using pledge to clean your bike...

Postby ThE DoWnHiLL DeMoN on Sat Sep 08, 2007 1:16 am

i always see members over at bike forums rave about using pledge to clean their bikes, so while i was at Target earlier this week i decided to pick up a can and try it out. let me tell you, it worked great...

last year, i really kept my bike clean, but i have definitely not kept up on it that much this year. and when i did clean it, i used to use a bike specific cleaner that worked good, sometimes it took a lot of time to get it really clean...

with the pledge, it honestly took me a total of about 10 minutes and i was completely done with everything, and it was pretty dirty because i haven't touched it in at least 200 miles. in addition to using it on the frame and fork, you can also use it on the seat post (not the seat) and bars (not the hoods) and cables with great results...

i just thought i would pass this on, because i know that people sometimes like to have their bike look as good a possible for certain rides, so now you can. and Paul, this mean you too...

also, as far as the wheels go, baby wipes work great too. i know most people use alcohol on a clean cotton cloth, and that does work great, but if you need a quick cleaning and you're on the road, just bring a small package of baby wipes and you can pretty much clean anything on your bike...

Funny you should mention this...I ride a Ti frame, and I asked the builder what to clean it with. He said "Pledge". Since my wife was headed to the market, I asked her to p/u some Pledge. She came back with a generic, store brand. I calmly said "Listen, let me splurge a little and get the 'real' stuff for my bike"... next visit to the market, she p/u Pledge...been using it ever since.
I also use it on the mtbike...it leaves a slight film which makes washing mud and grime off a breeze. Good tip...

I look forward to trying Pledge. However, I just cleaned my bike last week so I'm good for a while. Like I said to some of my "A" bike buddies...I clean my bike every few months (about every 500 miles) whether it needs it or not.

I just got an idea...I'm thinking of storing my bike in the living room and placing some magazines and a lamp on it. Perhaps it will be mistaken as a modern endtable and pledged more frequently.

Actually, I probably clean the frame about once per month or two.

What I really hate cleaning is the chain & drivetrain. I recently used this little gizmo that wraps around the chain. It worked well when it was new but now doesn't seem to get the chain as clean as it should in the 30 seconds that its suppose to.

Sometimes I've used an old toothbrush/t-shirts/and WD-40. Afterwords I try to get as much of the WD40 off as possible and then lube it with Finish line lube. This does a good job but kills a great deal of time.

Sometimes I just add more Finishline lube and wipe of the excess (i skip the WD40 step). I doesn't come out as clean, but its less work. Since I hate doing this I probably don't do it often enough...which is every couple of months.

Any tips other than clean it more often!

my drivetrain is fairly clean and what I do is I wipe it down at the end of every ride with chain lube and cleans it right up eliminating the sludge build up.

I was afraid someone was going to tell me I should clean it after every ride. I'll try.

I'd like to come back with something witty about why my image is LARGE, but instead I'll be honest. I looked around for images that met the suggested constraint ...6KB, 80 x80 pixels, but I kept striking out ! After half an hour of striking out I found this picture on a different section of the MPBC website (Saratoga pictures) and cut a pasted the link and it worked!

I'd prefer something smaller and I saw some nice pictures of cyclists & sunsets on the road & on trails but they were all bigger than the 6KB constraint.

If you have any suggestions where I can find interesting looking images that fit the MPBC constraints let me know. :?:

Paul, you are too cute! :D I like your new avatar. It is definitely an attention grabber. But your Secret Agent job is now in jeopardy.
